Mark 15:42-47
Mark 15:42-47 42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the
day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of
Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the
kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate
was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he
asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from
the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So
Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen,
and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the
entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of
Joseph saw where he was laid.
In these 5 verses I see a four-fold witness to the death and burial
of Jesus.
First of all, there was Joseph of Arimathea who took down a
dead body. He was a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting
for the Kingdom of God. In one of the other gospels it describes Him as a good
man. He knew Jesus was dead, and after looking after the body He wrapped it in
the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock.
Secondly, there was Pilate. He did not release Jesus during
the trail. But he did release the body of Jesus. But first he required proof of
death. He made sure Jesus was dead.
Thirdly, the centurion had to make sure Jesus was dead. He knows
when someone is dead- he would have killed people in his line of work. He was
an expert in death.
Finally, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw
where He was laid. They
loved Jesus and if there was any life in Him, they would have seen it. I’m sure
they would have done anything to bring Him back from the dead.
Jesus was dead,
buried, finished and seemingly defeated and only a miracle could change the
situation. A miracle did occur when Jesus rose from the dead. The same miracle
has raised me from the dead.
Application:
after reading this I see that Jesus was truly dead and I see the amazingness of
the resurrection. I am amazed by the fact that the same resurrection power is
there for my discipleship and for my life. For me to live is the gospel. I will
share this truth with the rest of class 13 team Guatemala.
